NEW SOUTH ASIAN MUSLIM AMERICAN SITCOM
“UNFAIR & UGLY” LAUNCHES APRIL 23RD
One of the first TV shows about a South Asian American and Muslim American family
LOS ANGELES, CA – APRIL 11, 2018 – Stranger Magic Productions announced that its debut scripted dramedy, Unfair & Ugly, will launch on Monday, April 23rd. New episodes of the anticipated sitcom will stream weekly on YouTube every Monday and Wednesday until its conclusion on May 9th. The series has 6 episodes, 22 minutes each.
Unfair & Ugly is about a South Asian Muslim American family in Orange County, California trying to keep it together. Goody-two-shoes Sana and her slacker brother Haaris struggle to balance their immigrant parents’ expectations while navigating millennial adulting.
The groundbreaking show is one of the first scripted TV series about a South Asian American family, a Muslim American family, and an Asian American family. The show concept and official series trailer were well received by audiences, having been featured on NBC, Aljazeera, Huffpost, and The OC Register.
The show’s launch will be celebrated with a Red Carpet Premiere in Los Angeles on Friday, April 20th at the Landmark Regent Theatre followed by a Series Finale Premiere in New York City on Saturday, May 5th at Subculture.
Nida Chowdhry and Yumna Khan are the creators and executive producers behind Unfair & Ugly. The two women-of-color creators set out to “make a show that feels real” to them, “full of complex human characters, each with their own sense of humor and challenges.”
The main storylines deal with love, careers, and generation gaps. Layered into the show are subjects like mental health stigma and interracial love. The show is inspired by the unflattering characters of Arrested Development and the visual style of Aziz Ansari’s Master of None and Wes Anderson films.
